The IONIQ 5: Hyundai’s Star at the NADA EV Expo 2022

September 20, 2022

As automakers are shifting from internal combustion engines to eco-friendly electric vehicles, many firms are betting big on electric vehicles for green mobility. One such company that is successfully accelerating its transition to electrification and becoming a global leader in EVs is Hyundai.

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 took the EV world by storm, taking a massive leap into the retro-futuristic world with its designs and features. As exciting as that was, the best part was that the Ioniq 5 entered the Nepalese market fairly early.

This just goes to show how noteworthy Hyundai’s evolution in the electric car segment has been in the Nepalese market. Laxmi InterContinental P. Ltd., the authorized distributor of Hyundai automobiles in Nepal, has been a prominent name in the country’s EV scene.  Not only that, in a bid to help quell concerns about the infrastructural shortcoming for electric vehicles in Nepal, Hyundai Nepal has invested in its own infrastructural developments. The company has continuously concentrated its efforts to improve its charging platforms across the country along with several other long-term and short-term plans.

At the moment, the company currently sells the Kona and Ioniq 5 electric cars in the Nepalese market, both of which have managed to gain significant popularity amongst audiences. At the NADA EV Expo 2022, the Ioniq 5 is Hyundai’s knight in shining armour.

The Ioniq 5, the first car in Hyundai’s EV-dedicated Ioniq sub-brand and the first Hyundai automobile to be constructed on a new specialized E-GMP battery electric vehicle platform, ushers in a new era for EV design as well as EV performance and capability.  The Hyundai Ioniq 5 gets a Rear-Wheel Drive, Vision Roof, Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) feature, Ambient Mood Lights, Power Tailgate, Rain-Sensing Wipers, Blind-Spot View Monitor(BVM), and Voice Recognition Vehicle Control, among many others.

Hyundai Nepal offers the Ioniq 5 in a 58.9 kWh battery pack option with a rear-wheel drive. This entry-level motor produces 168bhp (125 kW) and a beefy 350 Nm of torque. This means you can go from 0 to 100kmph in just 5.2 seconds. The Ioniq 5 gets an official range of 364 km.

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 brings a lot to the table. It is a glimpse into the future of what electric cars will, and can be. This is also a testament to the evolution of electric cars. This glimpse into the future does come at a price. At Rs 1.16 crore, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 is significantly more expensive than other electric cars in the market. It is expensive, but the fact of the matter is, that the Ioniq 5 is at the crest of the EV wave, and for many, this justifies the price tag.

And, to top it all off, the Ioniq 5 has been proven to be the best electric vehicle by being crowned the 2022 World Car of the Year for the first time ever since the World Car Awards began in 2004. For now, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 appears to be enjoying its time at the top of the EV food chain in Nepal, and it will be interesting to see which vehicle has what it takes to knock it off its perch.
